Many Port Hardy residents were awakened early Tuesday morning after a tsunami evacuation order was put in effect.
Residents in certain zones of the district of Port Hardy were requested by police and fire rescue to leave their homes and assemble at their nearest evacuation centre.
The evacuation, which began just before at 3:30 am and lasted for roughly an hour, came after the National Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for coastal B.C. after a magnitude 8.2 earthquake occurred 279 kms off the coast of Kodiak, Alaska, early Tuesday morning.

The tsunami warning was cancelled at around 4:30 am in the morning with residents given the all clear to return home at approximately 4:40 am.
EmergencyInfoBC stated the warning affected the Juan de Fuca Strait coast, the outer west coast of Vancouver Island, the central coast and northeast Vancouver Island, and the north coast and Haida Gwaii coastal areas of British Columbia from Attu, Alaska to the Washington State coastline.
