Port Hardy wildfire update

A Monday update on a wildfire that has been burning outside of Port Hardy since July 3

As of Monday morning the fire outside of Port Hardy is measured at 16 hectares and is 20% contained, and the 1 hectare spot fire is now contained, according to Coastal Fire Centre Information Officer Mike McCulley.

Ground crews and helicopters are continuing work on the south east flank of the fire, trying to prevent it from spreading closer to town.

McCulley acknowledged the extremely hard work of ground crews, and says that their safety is a top priority. He also said that it is important for people to understand that this is still a volatile situation, and the extremely dry conditions mean that people have to live their lives a little bit differently from now on.

Port Hardy lifted an evacuation order for people living in homes on Upper Carnarvon and Mayors Way; the order has been downgraded to an evacuation alert.

The Coastal Fire Centre is encouraging people to be extremely cautious when in forests and to rethink certain habits. “Even if it’s inconvenient, its important to be super diligent,” McCulley says.
