SURREY — Surrey firefighters took out the garbage early Sunday morning when a trash pile at a waste transfer station caught fire in Port Kells.
The two-alarm fire, at the Metro Vancouver Surrey Transfer Station, happened when the place was closed. Nobody was injured.
Firefighters fought their way through thick smoke to reduce the threat to a mere smoldering pile of garbage.
Investigators do not consider the fire to be suspicious but have yet to determine the cause, Surrey Deputy Fire Chief Karen Fry said Monday.
The transfer station is located at 97th Avenue and 192nd Street and is operated by Wastech.
