Port of Nanaimo announces new appointees to board

Jeet Manhas, Shiva Dean named new federal representatives

Businessman and former city councillor Jeet Manhas has been appointed as the federal representative on the Port of Nanaimo’s board of directors.

Manhas was appointed along with Shiva Dean, appointed as the federal rep for the International Trade Group of Users. Both appointments, announced by the port on Wednesday, are for three-year terms and fill two outstanding vacancies on the board.

The federal representative is nominated by the Minister of Transport, while the International Trade User Group representative is nominated by the minister in consultation with user group representatives, as outlined in the Canada Marine Act.

Manhas, who previously sat as the board’s chairman and later provincial representative, has been a clothing store owner, gas station owner and general contractor building residential homes. Manhas has also held multiple community leadership positions with the city, regional district, Vancouver Island University Foundation and Oceanside Rotary Club.

Shiva Dean, who lives in Alberta, is an executive with more than 15 years of international and maritime experience with the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group. Dean has a background in international trade development in Asia and is experienced in port operations including rail/intermodal and trucking.
