Port promises access to kiteboard launch soon

Port Alberni will soon have its much loved kiteboarding launch pier back in action, according to PAPA CEO Zoran Knezevic.

Port Alberni will soon have its much loved kiteboarding launch pier back in action, according to Port Alberni Port Authority CEO Zoran Knezevic.

The current kiteboarding launch at the Harbour Quay Marina has been inaccessible due to a broken access ramp for months despite new abutments installed last year.

“We engineered and put new abutments on the ramp last summer,” said Knezevic.

“That one failed after we spent more than $25,000 for re-engineering that.”

Currently, the ramp—located beside the Maritime Discovery Centre—is sitting on the float and is unsafe to use. The port authority is waiting on the replacement to arrive.

“We have ordered a replacement ramp because the existing ramp is too heavy for the existing float,” said Knezevic.

The kiteboarding launch should be operational by the end of January, he said.
