Princeton’s rumour mill is running about who will run for mayor in the by-election to be held on Aug. 11.

So far no one has announced their nomination to the Spotlight.

Acting Mayor Jason Earle, who is also a councillor, won’t confirm whether or not he will run. Earle has been acting mayor since former mayor Fred Thomas died in early May.

Coun. Frank Armitage also said he hasn’t decided yet whether he will run.

Previous mayor Randy McLean, who lost the last election to Thomas, said he will not be running.

Keith Olsen, another previous mayor of Princeton, said he isn’t thinking of running, but he won’t be completely sure until closer to the deadline.

Spencer Coyne, who used to be a councillor and is president of the Save Our Hospital Coalition, said he won’t be running.

Candidates have from June 26 to July 8 to make their announcement. If a current councillor – such as Earle or Armitage – decides to run, he or she must announce their nomination on or before June 18, according to the Local Government Act.

An advanced poll will take place on Aug. 1 for those who cannot make it on Aug. 11.
