Possible cougar spotted in Mission

Police are asking the public to be on the lookout after two potential sightings of a cougar came in Thursday

A potential cougar sighting in Mission is putting RCMP and local parents on alert.

Mounties received a call around 5 p.m. Jan. 19 about a young girl who alleged she had been chased by a cougar while walking along the green belt in the 12 Avenue and Weatherhead Court area. A search found by RCMP and a conservation officer nothing.

Five hours later, Mission police received a second report of a cougar at Dunsmuir Street and 10 Avenue. No signs of a big cat were located.

“As a safety precaution, we want to alert the public and the community of the two cougar sightings,” says Cpl. Sharon Siluch, Mission RCMP. “Please be mindful when allowing small children to play outside and keep a close eye on your pets.”

Further arrangements have been made to notify the BC Conservation Office, however, Mission members are monitoring any further cougar sightings.

Anyone  who sees the “cougar” is being asked to call 604-826-7161 or 1-877-952-7277.
