The drive to decriminalize cannabis in B.C. is building locally.
Organizers of the Sensible BC campaign for Vernon-Monashee have been collecting signatures since Sept. 9 in the province-wide effort in support of a marijuana referendum.
“So far our numbers are 641 and rising,” said Boyd Goble, local organizer. “That’s with just 10 canvassers reporting.”
Each jurisdiction has until Dec. 5 to collect 10 per cent of the population’s support – locally approximately 5,000 signatures are needed.
Along with active canvassers out in the community, those interested in signing onto the initiative can stop by Kush Organics between Monday and Thursday.
In Lumby, residents can sign the petition at Gateway Healing Arts, 1998 Vernon St.
But additional local support is needed in the province-wide effort to decriminalize cannabis.
“We are looking for a store front location but have very limited funds so can only afford to pay the utilities,” said Goble.
“So if any kind property owners want to help us out we would really appreciate it.”
The local campaign organizers will be meeting regularly starting again next week but they are looking for an indoor spot due to the weather.
