Power outage affects more than 7,600 people in south Island region

The storm hit the Island hard last night leaving more than 2,000 people in Greater Victoria without power through the night and into this morning.

According to BC Hydro more than 7,600 people are without power in the south Island region, with nearly 4,000 of those on Salt Spring, Pender and Saturna Islands.

Power was restored to close to 2,000 people in Cordova Bar this morning.

Crews are on-site working to restore power on Salt Spring Island, Sidney and north Saanich. More than 1,000 people were affected by the outage in Sidney and north Saanich with an additional 800 people on Salt Spring Island. According to BC Hydro power is expected to be restored by 6 p.m. tonight.

Additional crews are en route to an outage in Cordova Bay that affected 1,900 people.

As of 7 a.m. today BC Hydro tweeted 575 residents in Saanich, Langford and View Royal area without power. Crews have been asigned to all affected areas and are investigating.

Crews were out at around midnight on Feb. 11 in the Qualicum Beach area, where most of the affected people were.

As of 11 p.m. last night 1,000 people were without power in Sidney and north Saanich.

Another 1,600 people in the Shawnigan Lake area experienced outages around the same time.

BC Hydro worked through the night yesterday to restore power to residents in the Salt Spring area that left 2,000 people without power.

BC Hydro recommends an emergency kit to prepare for outages. Kits should include flashlights, extra batteries, a first air kit, bottled water, a corded telephone and non-perishable foods. For a complete list click here.
