Premier pledges more work on Highway 14

$10 million in improvements just a start, John Horgan says

More than $10 million in government funding is just the start to improving transportation issues on Sooke and West Coast roads, says Premier John Horgan.

But those improvements don’t include widening Highway 14 to four lanes from Humpack to Otter Point roads.

“We will focus on safety initiatives and expand the road to allow traffic volumes to move more efficiently, but the perfect world is not four lanes because the corrdior doesn’t lend itself to that,” Horgan said.

Instead, there will be “significant investments” to make the corridor safer and more effective.

Horgan is waiting for a comprehensive road study before announcing more improvements, but is already eyeing road shouldering west of Sooke to Shirley and more road widening.

The study is expected sometime this year.

Earlier this year, the government announced $10-million in improvements to Sooke and West Coast roads which included upgraded bus stops, bus pullout, a new two-lane bridge on Gillespie Road, a bus-queue jump lane, new safety signs, a slow moving vehicle pull out and a rest area.
