Teachers from Prince Rupert are inviting members of the public to join them tomorrow as they take their job action to City Hall.
According to the union, on March 6 teachers will be meeting outside the Courthouse on McBride at noon and will be walking up to City Hall. The march is being done at the same time as a rally in Victoria in support of teachers.
“We have watched as education has been denigrated for the last ten years, in this province. Funding has been robbed from our schools, and teachers have been under attack by the provincial government. The government’s proposed legislation, Bill 22 is just the most recent blow,” says Middle School teacher, Elliot Fox-Povey.
“It’s a profound insult to teachers, it worsens the situation in the classroom for students, and it intentionally misleads the public. Teachers want a fair settlement; students, parents, and all of us need a reinvestment in education…Not being paid less than last year would be good, keeping pace with the cost of living, but ask a teacher in Prince Rupert about their biggest concern and you’ll hear about their struggle to teach in an underfunded, overcrowded system.”
On Wednesday union members will be providing leaflets to the public and demonstrate on the streets near their school at 11:30 a.m. After that members will hold a meeting “to decide what is next”.
