Submitted article–On Friday, Tahayghen Elementary hosted its first Winter Activity Exhibition. With parents and family attending, 70 students from grades 4 to 7 showcased a variety of skills developed under the guidance and mentorship of 8 community members. Whether in the form of a completed bentwood box, a carefully carved plaque, or a display of martial arts, all the students in the program showed there’s more to school than academics. It was encouraging to see students who both struggle and excel in math skillfully draw traditional Haida forms and shapes. Students who might struggle with writing, speak thoughtfully and eloquently of the challenges and rewards of learning how to carve. The smiles on the faces of the students showed a pride and confidence in displaying the skills they had developed. Photos and videos showed the entire process for all eight activities. From students tentatively entering the ocean to surf for the first time, to students proudly sanding their bentwood boxes, the slideshow of pictures captured the entirety of all the activities. This exhibition was the culmination of a 6 week program in which students learned from a community member in one of eight skill areas: Haida design, carving, weaving, photography, bentwood box making, pottery, aikido, and surfing. The program is grateful to Gwaii Trust and Success by Six for funding and would also like to acknowledge program instructors Frank Williams, Barb Lawrence, Cecil Brown, Nate Jolley, Dorcas White, Cori Savard, Jason Shafto, and Toby Sanmiya.
