A prolific offender in the South Okanagan said he may undergo surgery as he awaits a bail hearing.
Ronald Arthur Teneycke made a brief appearance via video at the Penticton Courthouse from the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre Wednesday.
Defence counsel Michael Welsh said he received a “considerable” amount of disclosure and adjourned the matter for one week until Sept. 30 so he could discuss the information with his client.
Teneycke told Welsh that he is expecting to go into surgery next week, after missing a prior court date on Aug. 26 due to being hospitalized.
Teneycke failed to show up for a 90-day intermittent (weekends) sentence in June after pleading guilty to making or possessing explosives and possessing a weapon contrary to a court order. During several appearances at court while dealing with this matter, Teneycke maintained that his doctor told him he wouldn’t be fit to serve a sentence for three to six months.
A warrant for Teneycke’s arrest was issued in early-July after he failed to show up for his intermittent jail sentence. It is alleged that a few weeks after the warrant was issued, Teneycke shot a man outside of Oliver and held up the Eastside Grocery in Oliver.
Teneycke was arrested on July 23 in a Cawston orchard after a large police manhunt tore through the South Okanagan.
Teneycke is facing 14 charges including committing a robbery using a restricted or prohibited firearm, flight from a police officer, discharging a firearm with the intent to wound or disfigure and aggravated assault. He had previously spent 12 years in federal prison and since his release in 2007 he has returned to jail several times for breaches of probation and in 2013 was found guilty of possession of methamphetamine.
