A resident on Railway Avenue chased two would-be criminals after they attempted to lift his snowmobile from his property on Jan. 6.

That is just one of the reports from the Smithers RCMP this week as they investigate a sudden spike in property crimes.

The RCMP noted in their weekly report that they are aware of an increase in property crimes over the past two weeks and want to remind the public to secure all of their property and belongings.

That statement was attached to an invitation to anyone to call the detachment if they see anything they feel is suspicious in nature. The detachment’s number is 250-847-3233.

Their weekly update begins with a call they received at 11:40 p.m. on Jan. 6 where the complainant said that he had caught two males attempting to steal his snowmobile from a residence on Railway Avenue. The caller phoned the RCMP while still chasing the suspects down the road. Police attended immediately and found the caller who pointed officers to the two men.

The suspects attempted to flee from police but were caught after a short foot chase.

Two 27-year-old males were arrested and were later released from police custody pending approval of theft charges.
