The public are being asked for their input on the future 216th Street highway interchange, through a government website.

Locals and drivers are being asked for their thoughts through engage.gov.bc.ca/highway1and216/.

The $59 million project was announced just before last year’s election call, with funding coming from the federal, provincial, and Langley Township governments.

Construction is expected to start by the late fall of this year and be complete by 2019.

It will extend the six-lane widening from around 200th Street all the way to 216th Street, and create a new diamond interchange for drivers.

“The 200th street interchange is at capacity and this new interchange and six-laning is needed to accommodate increasing traffic demands and regional growth in this area,” said Fort Langley-Aldergrove MLA Rich Coleman.

Cloverdale-Langley City MP John Aldag said the reduced travel times will allow local businesses and residents to better connect to their communities.

“It is important that members of the public have their say,” said Langley Township Mayor Jack Froese.

Related to the interchange project, the Township is now working on plans for the Williams neighbourhood near 216th on the south side of the highway.

Unlike most of Willoughby, Williams is planned to include industrial and business uses. A public open house on the project is scheduled for March 30, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre.
