A suspect is in police custody after allegedly assaulting someone and driving erratically through the city while impaired.

The Williams Lake RCMP say that shortly before 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28, police responded to a report of a possible impaired driver in the area of Carson Drive.

The initial report was that the driver of the vehicle had allegedly assaulted another male before getting into a vehicle and driving away.

Police responded and found the suspect vehicle leaving the area and attempted to pull it over. However, police say, the vehicle took off at a high rate of speed down Carson Drive and through a busy school zone during the lunch hour.

For public safety reasons, police did not pursue the vehicle but subsequently located it shortly after.

The vehicle and driver were eventually stopped in the dairy fields area and, despite the driver’s attempts to resist arrest, he was taken into custody.

The driver was held for the weekend pending charges and was to appear in Williams Lake Provincial Court yesterday.
