A 2.9-magnitude quake shook the region last week, originating in the waters by Cowichan Bay and Salt Spring Island.
The quake was at 6:47 a.m. on Feb. 15, according to Natural Resources Canada.
It was felt in Duncan, Salt Spring Island, Ladysmith, Cowichan Bay, Chemainus and Richmond.
The latitude was 48.9 north and a 123.5 west latitude and occurred on the North American plate.
The quake was not strong enough to cause any damage.
Alison Bird, earthquake seismologist, said this size of the earthquake is routine for the area, but the shallow depth and close proximity meant more people felt the shake.
“It just happened at a time when people might feel it. If people are laying down, they are more likely to feel it than if they are sitting up or walking or standing,” said Bird.
Bird said one of the largest earthquakes that has occurred in the area was back in 1909 that was a magnitude 6.
Last week’s quake occurred a week after a 3.2 earthquake under the waters near San Juan Island and felt in Victoria.
