Sergeant Matthew Sokyrka from 893 Beaufort Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron (RCACS) in Qualicum Beach is having a blast this summer as part of the three week Advanced Aviation Course (AAC) at the Comox Cadet Flying Training Centre.
“The Advanced Aviation Course is a course designed to prepare air cadets for future flight training,” said Lieutenant Kyle Gadallah, assistant flight commander for the Advanced Aviation Course. “This course takes a more advanced approach to aviation and prepares cadets for instruction. Classroom instruction reviews the following subjects: principles of flight, propulsion, meteorology and navigation.”
Cadet Sokyrka, 15, said “On this course I had the chance to learn more about aviation. While on the course I hope to get my radio licence and to become a better instructor. When I go back to my squadron I want to teach the younger cadets everything I learned while here.”
When he’s not at camp, Cadet Sokyrka said he enjoys golfing or building models and hanging out with friends from Kwalikum Secondary School.
“This summer training opportunity allowed me to make new friends from across Canada; I met people from as far away as Ontario! It also allows me to gain new experiences and will open the door for me with new opportunities,” said cadet Sokyrka.
More than 3,400 Sea, Army and Air Cadets are participating in summer training activities across B.C. this summer. Other cadets have had the opportunity to travel across the country and even overseas.
