After a year of searching for a new home with no luck, the Quesnel and District Daycare Society has reached out to the city for help.

Society president Cordell Davis and daycare supervisor Elaine Kopetski penned a letter to mayor and council detailing the challenges the non-profit organization is facing in their current location on Kinchant Street in Quesnel, which they have been at for almost 50 years.

Davis and Kopetski stated the house is “no longer a space that is appropriate, warm or healthy for the children that attend.”

In 1972 the society purchased the lot and house that it currently operates in, providing childcare programs for up to 23 children ages 30 months to kindergarten and employing a staff of three.

“To continue operating an essential service, we need to move our current facility into a suitable building before the winter months arrive, as the current location is very cold once the seasonal temperatures changes,” states the letter.

“We are reaching out to you in hopes that you will support our society or know of someone who can direct our situation to support all the families and children. They deserve a warm, safe facility everyday.”

At the July 7 city council meeting, Mayor Bob Simpson said the letter will be taken into consideration by the City and its economic development staff, who could pursue provincial funding for the daycare.
