Swimmers in Quesnel may not have been able to travel to meets across the province during the pandemic, but they were still able to compete.

The Quesnel Waveriders Swim Club competed in a virtual swim meet called WaveMaker throughout the month of May. Quesnel swimmers joined over 700 competitors from around the world in the event.

Coach Jeritt Brink said 17 Quesnel swimmers took part in the meet, with many setting personal best times. The full results of WaveMaker, with Waverider swimmers highlighted, is available on the Waverider’s website.

Brink had to act as coach, timekeeper and cheerleader due to COVID-19 health protocols.

“These kids swam very hard during the process of the virtual meet,” he said. “I was blown away by the swimmers’ attitudes! They also showed tremendous racecraft as they really had to push hard to swim by themselves, or just against fellow teammates.”

Brink praised the meet’s layout, which allowed swimmers to race in as many disciplines as they wanted to, for only one fee.

“It offered a lot for these kids who have been starving for meets,” he said. “It was a welcome season-ender, as we have put in a successful, and safe season from Oct. 5 untill this June 11 being our last day. Very proud of all efforts this year.”
