Lumby wants some details before committing to a regional parks program.
Council agreed in-principle Monday to support the Regional District of North Okanagan’s proposed parkland legacy fund.
But a final decision on participation won’t be made until a few questions have been answered.
“How will it be decided where land is purchased and who will get the final say?” said Coun. Lori Mindnich.
RDNO has suggested a system similar to that used by the Regional District of Central Okanagan. Under that formula, member communities provide funds to purchase and maintain lands of regional significance.
However, there is a concern from Lumby officials that any funds collected will go to parks in other communities and Lumby may not receive anything directly.
“We want the projects done by consensus and not popularity demand, and we want to see what the funding formula is,” said Mayor Kevin Acton, adding that there is a benefit to acquiring property.
“If we want to protect land for future generations, we have to put our money where our mouth is.”
