More than 1,300 people braved the heat for the Vernon Cup horse races at Kin Race Track Sunday. And similar crowds are anticipated for the final races this Sunday.

“The large crowd was treated to an exciting afternoon of races at the oldest operating race track in Canada,” said Ed Woolley, president of the Kin Racetrack Association.

The track is 119 years old.

There were five races over the course of the afternoon with the feature race of the day, the 1 1/8 mile Vernon Cup won by Smart Call by two lengths over West Walker. Smart Call is a repeat winner having won in a photofinish in 2011.

“The success was not limited to the track however with almost $19,000 bet on the day,” said Woolley.

Organizers are hopeful the large crowds will be back on Sunday for the final day of races for the season at Kin Race Track. The feature race that day will be the Sun FM Mile.

Gates open at noon with the parade to post at 1:15 p.m. Admission is $5, children 12 and under are free.
