The deadline for Vernon’s 30th Avenue revitalization has been drenched.
It was anticipated upgrades to main street, from 33rd to 35th streets, would be completed by June 28 but three days of work have been lost because of torrential rain.
“You can’t finish concrete properly in the rain,” said Mark Dowhaniuk, the City of Vernon’s infrastructure engineer.
Some utility issues have also impacted the completion date, which may not be during the second week of July.
The total revitalization project cost is $2.2 million and that remains unchanged despite the delays.
“The way the contract is written, there is a clause for unseen site circumstances and weather is one of them,” said Dowhaniuk.
As part of the revitalization project, the 33rd Street intersection at 30th Avenue will be closed to traffic between today and Friday.
Detours will be in effect for the duration of the intersection works and 34th Street will be re-opened to accommodate this closure. West and eastbound traffic is to use 32nd Avenue or 25th Avenue to bypass this closure.
“Businesses continue to be open during the construction and they appreciate the public’s support,” said Dowhaniuk.
