RCMP have cordoned off the area by Eckhardt Avenue and Haywood Street after a suspicous package believed to contain explosives was called in this morning.

Sgt. Rick Dellebuur said around 6:35 a.m. they received a call of something resembling explosives in a small plastic cooler that is lunch box size near a walking path.

“From looking at it, it appears it could by dynamite,” said Dellebuur. “It appears to be some type of explosive compound in there with two sticks maybe more, but you can’t tell because it appears that paper towel is wrapped around it or in the box.”

The RCMP bomb squad unit has been called in from Vancouver to handle the situation and Dellebuur said they expect them to arrive this afternoon.

“We are confident at this time the action we have taken is appropriate to ensure the safety of everyone in this area,” said Dellebuur. “The bomb unit will make a determination of what they are going to do and how they are going to remove it or deal with it, but that is up to them.”

RCMP expect the portion of the road they have secured to be closed until late this afternoon.
