The Nanaimo RCMP has cancelled this year’s Law Enforcement Torch Run in Nanaimo.
The 2017 event, held at Maffeo Sutton Park since 2010 to support B.C. Special Olympics athletes, had been scheduled for Saturday (June 24) at Maffeo Sutton Park.
Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said dwindling participation, due in part to competition with other non-profit and charitable fundraisers, contributed to the decision to cancel this year’s event.
“Dwindling participation, yes, for sure – and it has. It’s been dropping every year,” O’Brien said.
In a press release O’Brien said Nanaimo RCMP continues to support B.C. Special Olympics and in the coming months will attempt to find other ways to support the athletes. O’Brien acknowledged sponsors for supporting the event since 2010.
