Both people and property has come and gone this late summer season. According to police, cars, food, and fishing gear have all been changing location.

Thefts of fishing tackle and food in Burton area

On Aug. 23, a resident of Burton Cross Road reported that during the night someone had stolen fishing tackle from his unlocked shed. Later that day, a resident of McCormack Road told police that somebody had entered an unlocked building on their property and had stolen a number of food items from a freezer. The home owner is believed to have been home at the time of the offence which is suspected to have occurred sometime during the night.

Truck stolen in Nakusp

Nakusp RCMP responded to a report of a stolen pickup truck from a local repair shop on Aug. 24. Police were advised that the vehicle had been stolen sometime during night; it was located in the morning by the shop owner along Hwy 23 near Hotsprings Road. The red flat deck Ford sustained significant damage likely from being driven in an erratic manner. If you have information regarding this theft, or saw the truck being driven, please contact the Nakusp RCMP.

Stolen and recovered ATV

An abandoned ATV was found in the driveway of a residence on Shakespeare Road on Aug. 24. The ATV was found to have been stolen from the garage of a residence a short distance from where it was later discovered. There was no damage to the ATV and it appears to have been pushed to the other driveway, and neighbours didn’t see any suspicious people in the area on the evening of the theft.

“With the influx of additional people during the summer months, it is even more important to keep valuables locked up and out of sight,” said Corporal Ryan Fehler of the Nakusp RCMP, who reminded residents to be diligent in watching for, and reporting, suspicious behaviour particularly in rural areas. If you have any information regarding the above noted incidents, please contact the Nakusp RCMP or Crimestoppers. The Nakusp and Slocan Lake RCMP had a busy month between July 19 and August 21, attending to over 230 calls for service and attending to 18 motor vehicle collisions.

Impaired motor vehicle collision

Around 3 a.m. on July 20, the Nakusp RCMP attended a single vehicle roll over on Highway 6, near Government Hill Road in Nakusp.

A lone woman was the only person in the vehicle, and due to physical signs and smells, a roadside breathalyzer was used. After two failed readings, the driver was issued a Notice of Driving Prohibition for 90 days, and a 30 day vehicle impoundment.

Hit and run collision

Although alcohol was suspected, Nakusp RCMP were unable to determine if it was a factor in a hit and run collision that occurred at a property located on Columbia Crescent in Nakusp. The vehicle left the road, drove onto the complainant’s front lawn and hit his parked vehicle.

Police later found the suspect’s vehicle, and evidence led police to the driver, a local woman in her 30s. The driver admitted to being responsible and was charged under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Impaired driver

An anonymous call to the Nakusp RCMP on July 27 around 10:40 at night tipped them off that an intoxicated male was leaving the Leland Hotel in a red station wagon.

When the police arrived, they saw the described vehicle pulling into a parking stall in front of the Leland Hotel. The lone driver was identified and showed signs of impairment, and failed a subsequent breathalyzer test. The driver was issued a 90 day Immediate Roadside Prohibition, and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Overdue tuber (not a long-awaited potato)

The Nakusp RCMP received a report on July 30 in the late afternoon, of a visiting Calgarian who was missing on Arrow Lakes. The man had last been seen near the ‘Bahamas’ in Arrow Lakes on a white and black circular tube. After deciding to go for a float on his own, he had become lost once he was separated from the group. The Nakusp RCMP and Search and Rescue searched the area, and the Nakusp RCMP located the male a short time later on Highway 6 near MacDonald Creek. The man said he had tubed across the lake and he didn’t know exactly where he was, so he walked up toward the highway to get help.

Overdue boaters

Early in the morning of August 3, the Nakusp RCMP received a call about overdue boaters at Trout Lake. The Nakusp RCMP, Nakusp Search and Rescue and some determined Trout Lake locals searched the area, and located the boat along with occupants on a nearby beach.

The owner of the boat stated the boat broke down so they camped on a beach while waiting for help. Although they were cold, the boaters were okay.
