A longtime volunteer has been recognized for trying to make the community a safer place.

Lyle Duffield has received the volunteer of the year award from the Silver Star Rotary Club.

“Lyle has served the RCMP and the City of Vernon for the past 20 years in our Citizens on Patrol program as well as being the president on the board of Crime Stoppers,” said Regan Borisenko, Citizens on Patrol co-ordinator.

Duffield was in the original class of Citizens on Patrol volunteers in 1997 and he has used his experience and training to become the first captain of the local patrol in 2011.

He has been integral to training new volunteers and will now go on to become the lead trainer.

Duffield, owner of Hi Fi Attic, received a plaque and $500 as part of the award.

He has chosen to donate the $500 to the Restorative Justice Society, which focuses on alternative ways to treat minor offences.
