RCMP investigating after jewelry theft at local store

Florence's Optical Jewellery and Gifts had a theft on Dec. 29.

The Grand Forks RCMP are reporting an ongoing investigation after “substantial” theft at a local store last week.

Florence’s Optical Jewellery and Gifts on Second Avenue reportedly suffered a break in and theft of jewelry at some point between Dec. 29 and 30, said RCMP Sergeant Jim Fenske. The break in was reported to RCMP on Dec. 30.

In a news release, Fenske said when RCMP arrived on scene they discovered the store had been accessed using “a cutting tool from a neighbouring vacant store.” The alarm was then disabled and a “substantial” amount of jewelry stolen, Fenske said, although the RCMP is not releasing a dollar value at this time.

This follows on the heels of a second theft the week before, Fenske confirmed, although the suspect in that theft was caught.

Fenske said RCMP have requested the assistance of the Forensic Identification Service in Nelson, and video and other physical evidence was recovered from the scene. RCMP are asking anyone with information to contact RCMP at 250-442-8288 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
