Smithers RCMP have issued a press release asking for the public’s assistance to deal with a series of break and enters in the area:

Over the last month, Smithers RCMP have responded to several break and enter complaints.

The suspect(s) have broken into residences during the day while the homeowner is out. The suspect(s) target cash and other small valuables which are easy to carry, hide or pawn. The residences are randomly selected and are usually unoccupied.

Although police are actively investigating these break ins, they are requesting the public’s assistance to identify any and all possible suspects.

If it appears that someone was in your residence and or, you notice anything missing, please contact us immediately, no matter how insignificant or small the items taken may seem.

Secondly, please report any and all suspicious persons in your neighbourhood – either on foot or in a vehicle, approaching houses where it is known the home owners are out, either at work or on vacation. If you are home and someone knocks on your door and upon answering, you don’t know the individual or their inquiry of you is suspect, call police. This is how some criminals find out if anyone is home before they break in.

Homes in the residential and rural areas are currently being targeted. Police want to emphasize that there has been no report of any violence or threats incurred during the break ins and if the suspect(s) believe someone is in the residence, they move on to another location.

If anyone has any information regarding these break ins, please contact the Smithers RCMP at (250) 847-3233 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477
