The Regional District of Central Kootenay has declared a state of local emergency in Area B southwest of Creston. The declaration refers to a narrow strip of land at the bottom of the Goat River, bordered by Highway 21 to the west.
“A cool spring, recent heavy rains and a significant snowpack have contributed to flood conditions in localized areas throughout the RDCK,” said Bill Macpherson, public information officer with the RDCK’s Emergency Operations Centre, in a written press release. “The declaration of a state of local emergency enables remediation work to be done quickly in extraordinary conditions.”
Earlier this week, the RDCK declared a state of local emergency in areas A (Crawford Creek) and H, after issuing a flood watch for certain creeks and rivers on Wednesday.
“Residents, particularly those within the evacuation alert area, should use vigilance and be aware of the potential danger that still exists,” said the press release. “Rivers, creeks and streams — and their banks — are dangerous throughout the spring runoff period. The heavy rains of the past 72 hours and the forecast for more precipitation in the coming days reinforces this danger.”
