The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) has voted to approve the renewal of its rural fire protection agreement with the City of Fernie.
The previous agreement was set to expire on Dec. 31 2020, with the new agreement pushing out the arrangement until Dec. 31, 2025.
The Fernie Fire and Rescue service provides fire protection services to parts of Area A of the RDEK on the same basis as in the City of Fernie, with costs shared between the City of Fernie and RDEK.
The new agreement includes a term that the RDEK will make a $450,000 contribution towards the construction cost of an “eventual” new firehall in Fernie, based on the notional cost of one truck bay. No further details were released on the new firehall.
“The renewed agreement will ensure the rural residents continue to receive the excellent services they are accustomed to as well as support the City of Fernie with the ongoing costs of operating the fire department,” read the RDEK staff report.
