The Regional District of Nanaimo will not appoint a member to a liaison committee set up by the Island Corridor Foundation (ICF).
The ICF had requested a member, but the RDN board showed no interest and quickly supported a motion from Area F Director Julian Fell to not participate.
“It appears this liaison committee is basically to provide a means to divert complaint . . . for the members to sidetrack issues,” Fell said at Tuesday’s board meeting.
He said the committee is only planning to meet once or twice a year and will not have any authority to address a number of controversial issues. He said other areas, including the City of Nanaimo have already declined to participate.
Parksville Mayor Marc Lefebvre said “there was a committee several years ago that included local municipalities and they were unilaterally disbanded, so you have to question why this is coming up now.” The motion not to appoint a member passed.
