Rebecca Mersereau joins campaign for coming Saanich by-election

A second Saanich resident has come forward to declare their candidacy for the coming Saanich by-election.

A second Saanich resident has come forward to declare their candidacy for the coming Saanich by-election.

Rebecca Mersereau, who was nearly voted in as a Saanich counsellor in the 2014 election, announced her intentions to fill the vacant seat left by the death of Vic Derman.

Mersereau is a water resource management consultant and chair for the CRD water advisory committee.

“Vic’s passing has created a void of progressive leadership,” said Mersereau in her Thursday morning release. “I feel so privileged that he passed on his experience, wisdom and vision for Saanich – especially given how independently minded he was. Now, I feel an important sense of obligation to carry his work forward at such a pivotal time for Saanich. And that’s what I intend to do.”

The byelection has been postponed and will likely occur in September. Nathalie Chambers is the only other candidate to announce their intentions to win the seat.
