A public information meeting regarding the Lac la Hache Elementary School reconfiguration at Mile 108 Elementary on April 5 had only one parent attend.
School District 27 (SD27) superintendent Diane Wright, board chair Wayne Rodier, Trustee Pete Penner, Lac la Hache school principal Steve Carpenter and Mile 108 principal Tom Turner were there to present information.
Turner says the small group discussed the potential ramifications of either scenario resulting from the upcoming board decision, to either reconfigure the school or leave things as they are.
The lone parent from Lac la Hache brought three children with her, one of her own and two from another family.
The meeting was fairly informative and the mother who was there left with “definite mixed feelings” after mulling over the pros and cons of either option, Turner explains.
Penner agrees “there were good points and there were struggles.”
Noting it’s tough to leave one school and have to get used to a new one, he adds one child who spoke up was excited about the increased sports opportunities.
The children who were there seemed “quite excited” about what would be available to them, Penner explains.
“We had hoped there would be some parents there from Mile 108, just to make that connection, but there were a lot of other things going on [that night].”
Any parents and children who haven’t been in Mile 108 Elementary before are welcome to arrange a tour of the school and see what is available for students, Penner notes.
Says Turner: “If there are other Lac la Hache parents who would like to visit the school or speak to me, please don’t hesitate to get a hold of me.”
