Record cold blasted Chilliwack with Arctic outflow winds

Yesterday saw record broken in Chilliwack as mercury for Feb. 10, 2021 only climbed to -4.5 C

Looking at the Chilliwack temperatures records historically, it’s extremely cold.

Yesterday’s frostiness saw a record broken for cold temperatures as the high for Feb. 10, 2021 was only -4.5 degrees Celsius, according to Roger Pannett, Chilliwack’s volunteer weather observer for Environment Canada.

That’s almost 12 degrees below normal, and even colder with the wind chill.

Most of the B.C. coast has been blanketed in Arctic air for days now, and yesterday there were many Arctic outflow warnings.

The record low for this day (Feb. 11) in Chilliwack, -10 degrees Celsius, was set in 1905, and high was -5.6 C, according to Pannett.

The last time it was that cold on Feb. 10 was the record-breaking -4.4 C of 1922.

“In comparison the record high maximum on this day was a warm 18.3 C ( 10.9 C above normal ) in 1962. The peak temperature during an usual seven-day record breaking February warm spell. Meanwhile the winter of 1962-63 in the U.K. was extremely cold and snowy.”

Almost a century ago there was a big storm.

In other weather trivia, Pannett noted that Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14 , 1923 saw a record low of -8.3 C and a record snowfall of 66 centimetres.

“Hopefully there will be less snow this weekend than that dump!” he concluded.
