Recycling changes outlined

Armstrong residents will have a chance to find out details of the new recycling collection program.

Armstrong residents will have a chance to find out details of the new Multi Material B.C. recycling collection program.

The province recently announced that Emterra Environmental has been awarded the MMBC contract to collect recycling in the North Okanagan, including the City of Armstrong.

“We will have a representative come make a presentation to us on Monday, April 7, at 2:30 p.m., said Coun. Kelly Rowe.

The meeting will be held in council chambers.

Funding requests

Rowe wants the city to “be a tree.”

The city received a request to help sponsor the Armstrong Spallumcheen Environmental Trust’s Green Day Festival on Saturday, April 19, at the Askew’s parking lot.

“They are providing three levels of sponsorship: seedling, for a $50 donation; sapling for $75 and tree for $100. I think we should be a tree,” said Rowe, who called for a motion to spend $100 from the mayor’s discretionary fund.

Council also voted unanimously to spend $110 from the fund for a banner to support the Royal Bank Cup national junior A hockey tournament in Vernon May 10-18.

“I think this is a good opportunity to help Vernon showcase junior hockey in Canada,” said Mayor Chris Pieper. “It’s a small donation in recognition of the tremendous work this (RBC Cup committee) is doing to bring the national tournament to Vernon.”

Bee creative

The Armstrong branch of the Okanagan Regional Library is inviting kids and adults to “bee creative.”

The idea is to come up with a bee flower calendar.

“The calendar is a community art project in collaboration with Runaway Moon (theatre group),” said Coun. Ron (Sully) O’Sullivan.

The calendar will be created by felting 12 cushions.

Adults and kids are invited to take part between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Armstrong branch (3305 Smith Drive) on April 12 and 26, May 10 and 24 and June 7 and 21.
