For Kat Slorstad from Nak’azdli Recycling Depot, recycling is the responsibility of everyone in the community.
“Recycling is not a right, it’s a responsibility,” Slorstad says.
In Fort St. James, what can and cannot be dropped off to Nak’azdli Recycling Depot and to the Integris Recycling Centre still seems to be causing confusion and even impatience at times for various members of the community.
“We are doing our best and we all need to work together as a community to ensure our recyclable waste is indeed being recycled and not ending up in the landfill,” Slorstad said.
The Integris Recycling Centre located at 445 Morice Ave. in Fort St. James, is accepting industrial and commercial cardboard and mixed paper. This includes bagged shredded paper, old phone books, magazines and beer boxes.
Businesses can either bring items in themselves or hire Imperative Recycling to collect their cardboard/paper weekly, biweekly or monthly for a service fee.
Nak’azdli Recycling Depot, on the other hand, deals with residential materials only.
“All residential materials come to Nak’azdli Recycling Depot,” Slorstad said. “All commercial, industrial and institutional cardboard and paper must be brought to Integris.”
Nak’azdli will accept items such as: plastics, tins, plastic bags styrofoam and glass jars.
Slorastad cannot stress enough that these items must be residential.
“Both of these services are free of charge thus far but because funding is limited, residents and business owners of Fort St. James should expect a fee in 2017,” Slorstad says.
Any residents who live in rural areas are eligible for recycling pick up through Imperative Recycling for $21 per month.
Currently, Nak’azdli collects recyclables including batteries and light bulbs at the depot only and not curbside.
The Depot is open Tues. – Sat. from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Nak’azdli Depot would like to thank all of those who have made extra recycling efforts.
“Thank-you from us here at Nak’azdli Recycling Depot for the eco-warriors who have been patient while we work out the kinks of the program,” Slortad said.
