North Okanagan politicians are joining the fight to keep ferries running on B.C.’s coast.
The Regional District of North Okanagan will write Premier Christy Clark to oppose B.C. Ferries service cuts and fare increases.
“I lived on Vancouver Island and the ferries are the life-blood of all of the islands and commerce, and it’s sad to see where things are going,” said director Howie Cyr.
According to director Bob Fleming, ferry routes are an extension of B.C. highways.
“All of our communities get huge highways support so why shouldn’t they?” he said.
RDNO and all other regional districts in B.C. have been asked to take a stand by the Skeena-Queen Charlotte Regional District.
Kingfisher centre gets assistance
The Regional District of North Okanagan is rallying behind an environmental organization.
A total of $13,857 from the gas tax fund will go towards upgrades and renovations at the Kingfisher Interpretive Centre.
The centre is focused on the environment and specifically improving the viability of the local salmon population.
“This is an excellent community facility and it’s volunteer run,” said Jackie Pearase, rural Enderby director.
“It’s an important community asset for Area F and the entire North Okanagan.”
Fire service possible
A neighbourhood south of Vernon may eventually have fire protection.
The Regional District of North Okanagan and the City of Vernon are discussing the possibility of the city providing fire protection to 38 properties in the Kalamalka Lakeview area.
“There’s a process that may prove positive to residents,” said Bob Fleming, director for the area.
The city’s proposal calls for a fee structure of $1.50 per $1,000 of improved value, which would be derived from potential fire insurance savings.
RDNO will petition the property owners to see if there is interest in the proposal.
“If successful, a bylaw will be drafted with the expectation that approval in 2014 will allow the service to commence Jan. 1, 2015,” said Ron Baker, community/protective services manager.
