Regional District Digs Into It’s Past

The Regional District of Mount Waddington will be digging deep into its past. On June 13, staff will be unearthing a time capsule buried 25 years ago.

At their regular meeting May 11, Administrator Greg Fletcher told the RDMW board staff would like to hold two events: one on June 13 to open the capsule, and a subsequent brief ceremony on the June 21 board meeting day to rebury a capsule for another 25 or 50 years depending on the board’s wishes. “Can we go three or four years just to be sure (he will still be alive),” joked Board Chair Dave Rushton. The June 13 event will be “focusing on the people responsible for burying it,” Fletcher said, and involve “a barbecue type of thing in the parking lot.”

Fletcher also revealed that there is an envelope, sealed for a quarter century, that is to be opened and read on June 13 as well. As for the length of time to put the time capsule away this time, the board agreed on 25 years. If they waited 50 years, there “might be a bridge to Sointula by then,” said Area B Director Phil Wainwright to a chorus of laughter.
