The Thornhill Transfer Station and Forceman Ridge Waste Management Facility is set to have a new operator for the next five years.

During an Oct. 6 special meeting of the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine board, directors voted to authorize a contract for Green for Life Environmental (GFL). Of the five bids submitted to the district, GFL was the lowest — a base amount of nearly $1.5 million per year for five years, excluding force accounts and taxes.

Total cost will vary by year because the contract is volume dependent, and there will be an initial cost associated with commissioning, which has been budgeted for.

Possible increases in future costs has been accounted for by the district in a tipping fee review that is currently waiting approval from the provincial government.

On its website, GFL says it has more than 10,000 employees and more than 135,000 commercial, industrial and institutional customers across Canada and 23 U.S. states.
