Regional District of Nanaimo provides options for used curbside collection containers

Residents given two choices for old garbage, food waste bins

  • Nov. 15, 2020 12:00 a.m.

The Regional District of Nanaimo’s automated garbage collection services is now in effect in the region.

But what happens to the old collection containers? You can either repurpose them but if you’re not able to, the RDN has just launched an initiative that will help them.

There are two options. First, until Nov. 30, RDN residents can drop off clean, used garbage, recycling and/or food waste containers during regular operating hours free of charge at either: RDN Church Road Transfer Station – 860 Church Rd., Parksville or at RDN Regional Landfill – 1105 Cedar Rd., Nanaimo.

The free dropoff only applies to the empty and clean used waste containers; standing tipping rates apply for all other waste.

Any residents who want the used containers to repurpose for other uses, for example animal feed or storage, are welcome to pick them up at the landfill or transfer station on a first-come, first-served basis. At the end of the campaign, all remaining containers will be shipped to Merlin Plastics for recycling.

The second option is from Nov. 17 to 28; RDN residents will have two opportunities to set out their clean, used garbage, recycling and/or food waste containers for pickup at curbside the day after their regularly scheduled collection day. However, only clean waste containers free of waste will be collected.

Frequently asked questions regarding the new automated curbside collection service can be found on the RDN website at rdn.bc.ca/curbside-collection-faqs.
