Regional District of Nanaimo’s committee of the whole is recommending $3,600 be provided to area First Nations for the Tribal Journeys 2017 event.
First Nations members will embark on the traditional canoe journey Friday (July 14) with a stop in Qualicum Bay on Aug. 1. The board had passed a motion in May directing staff to keep it apprised of any volunteer opportunities and Qualicum Chief Michael Recalma invited directors and staff to the event.
Bob Rogers, Nanoose director, proposed the motion to provide $1,200 of regional district First Nations liaison budget money to Qualicum, Snuneymuxw and Snaw-Naw-As First Nations.
The contingent will stop in Nanaimo on July 30 and in Nanoose Bay July 31. The 2017 journey culminates with a stop in Campbell River Aug. 7.
The recommendation will go before the board for approval July 25.
