Looking for a challenge – mentally, physically, socially, intellectually?

Explore, G.P. Vanier’s Grade 11 integrated studies outdoor education program, offers all that and more! Registration is now open for next year’s program.

Explore is entering its 17th year of teaching students life skills both in and outside of the classroom. Thought it’s run out of Vanier, the popular school program is open to all Grade 11 students in School District 71. And if history is any indication, interested students and parents should start thinking about registering now.

“It’s popular for good reason,” says Grayson Pettigrew, Explore teacher for the past nine years. “Not only do students get a chance learn more about our region through various trips, but they also develop real-world skills in an interesting and exciting way.”

Pettigrew is one of the teachers who works with the 48 students in the semester-long program. Math, biology, English, PE and outdoor education are taught in an accelerated manner to allow students to spend time outdoors, hiking, kayaking, camping and more.

In addition to the academics, Pettigrew notes that the students learn about other skills such as leadership, working together, communication, respect, environmental awareness and interpersonal relationships.

“It’s a perfect example of integrated and experiential learning. Kids who take part in this program not only are developing excellent leadership skills, but are challenging themselves both mentally and physically,” says Pettigrew.

As noted, the course is front-loaded so that students can enjoy trips around the Island through the spring. Students go hiking at Cape Scott, kayaking on the West Coast to Vargas Island and camping in the Broughton Archipelago. Closer to home, the class does a day-hike at Ripple Rock and spends a few days at Tribune Bay, where they get the chance to work on team building and overcoming challenges and obstacles. Explore 2017 Students had fun in the sun and snow on a recent trip to Ripple Rock north of Campbell River.

The cost of the program is $800 per student. Expenses are also supplemented by the Explore garage sale that takes place every May.

“Creating lifelong friendships, challenging one’s self and exploring the outdoors in an environment like ours, is an experience worth pursuing.”
