Reins tightened on Lake Country horses

Council is amending the nuisance bylaw so it is clear that anyone riding a horse in public areas must clean up after their animals.

“People do take horses on trails and walkways and there has been a concern,” said Mayor James Baker.

“Take a scoop and a bag with you.”

The bylaw states a person will be fined if manure is left on public or private property or any park, boulevard or road allowance other than the property of the horse owner.

A fine can be avoided if they remove the manure and dispose of it in a sanitary fashion.

While dog owners are required to clean up immediately after their pet, horseback riders will be given reasonable time to find a safe place to stop before they pick up the manure because vehicles can scare horses.

“This addresses their safety on a roadway,” said Baker.

The ticket for not picking up horse manure is $25.
