David Esworthy, a B.C. Sports Hall of Fame member and active Langley volunteer, died on Dec. 19, 2015. He was 86.
The longtime Langley resident was involved in equestrian sports for decades, and in 2009 was inducted into the hall of fame for his work in that field. He served as president of the Horse Council of B.C., among other roles.
He was also highly active in various regional sporting events, helping out behind the scenes and organizing community participation.
Esworthy chaired the Spirit of BC Langley group in the lead up to and aftermath of the 2010 Winter Olympics, and he helped out with the BC Summer Games when it came to town the same year.
A winner of the H.D. Stafford Good Citizen of the Year Award, he was also a Langley Senior of the Year and chaired the Better At Home advisory committee on aging in place.
“I’m an institution,” Esworthy once joked to the Langley Advance.
A memorial service for Esworthy will be held Feb. 6, at 1 p.m. at the riding arena at 1036 208th Street.
