A man with a lengthy rap sheet was given a six month jail sentence for beating up a local man in Revelstoke court last week.

Trevor Boyd Scott, 36, was sentenced after pleading guilty to assault causing bodily harm in court on Thursday, Sept. 8.

Crown prosecutor Bill Hilderman told the court that Scott punched and kicked a local man after they were drinking together near the Chevron gas station on April 2 at around 6:30 p.m.

Hilderman and defense lawyer Ian McTavish presented a joint submission for a six month sentence in exchange for Scott agreeing to forgo a trial by pleading guilty.

Judge Mark Takahashi accepted their agreement, even though he seemed inclined to hand down a longer one himself due to Scott’s lengthy rap sheet, which includes convictions for assault.

“There is not much that cries for mitigation,” he said. “This sentence is right at the bottom end of any range.”

When McTavish suggested Scott was serious about changing his life, Takahashi retorted, “That’s something that should have been considered five or 10 years ago.”

“If the gentleman has another thing happen to him, two years would not be unreasonable,” he added.

Scott was credited with time served for his sentence, but he remains in police custody while he  faces charges for assault, break and enter, resisting arrest and driving with a suspended license relating to a May 3 incident.

He has also been charged with breach of probation.
