One man was detained and questioned following a security concern at the Prince George Airport yesterday morning.

Flights were delayed and the airport evacuated after security came across two replica grenades in a man’s carry-on luggage.

The replicas were discovered at 8:21 a.m. during routine searches of carry-on luggage.

The police and firefighters determined the grenades were replicas before 9 a.m., and the airport was returned to normal operations shortly after.

The 44-year-old man who had the replicas was detained and later released.

“In today’s security conscience society, it is simply unacceptable to bring replica weapons onto a plane” says Cpl. Craig Douglass, spokesperson for the Prince George RCMP.  “At best, this incident has caused delays to hundreds of travelers.  Worse yet, some travelers may have missed connecting flights, had to postpone vacations or missed scheduled events.”

The grenades are in police custody and will be destroyed.
