Reuse Rendezvous invites Nanaimo residents to get rid of items that others might want

Reuse Rendezvous, Nanaimo’s longest-running reuse event that gives old possessions a new lease on life and out of the landfill, happens this weekend.

Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 8-9, residents can take unwanted toys, sporting goods, furniture, books, bikes and other items to the curb for others to take and reuse.

A City of Nanaimo press release notes that the Reuse Rendezvous is a great opportunity to clear clutter from homes and have fun seeking out bargains across the city.

Participants are asked to mark items set out for others to take with a ‘free’ tag. Items set out should not block sidewalks and bike lanes and any leftover items must be removed by Monday, Aug. 10.

Participants are also asked to stay safe by driving slowly, watching for children, parking carefully, obeying traffic signs and being diligent in observing physical distancing and other provincial COVID-19 health and safety guidelines. Residents are also asked to consider disinfecting any found items before bringing them into their homes.

“The Reuse Rendezvous is a fantastic opportunity for Nanaimo residents to practice zero waste by redistributing usable household goods,” said Kirsten Gellein, Nanaimo zero waste coordinator, in a press release. “The reality of COVID-19 means many residents have held off on donating household goods and visiting thrift stores, and sadly this year’s trunk sale was cancelled. For the Reuse Rendezvous, this is a ‘pandemic perk’ – we’re anticipating some high-quality items being set out at the curb on the weekend.”
