Revelstoke RCMP detachment commander Staff Sgt. Jacquie Olsen has credited stepped up liquor enforcement as the reason behind year-to-date drops in personal and property offences in and around Revelstoke.
The news came at the Mar. 22 Revelstoke city council meeting. Crime statistics are presented on a monthly basis, and Olsen also made a very brief presentation to council.
In municipal Revelstoke, offences falling under the crimes against a “person” category dropped from 36 in the first two months of 2010 to 13 in the same period in 2011. Property offences dropped from 52 to 31.
“We’ve had a very aggressive bar program going on with the local liquor inspector, and I think that has a lot to do with some of our property crimes and personal offences decreases,” Olsen told council.
Liquor Act offences dropped from 45 in January/February 2010 to 26 in January/February 2011.
Out-of-bounds/missing persons incidents at Revelstoke Mountain Resort have also dropped. There were 21 during the first two months of 2010, down to 8 during the same period in 2011. “We’ve had a good year in the backcountry and at the ski hill,” Olsen said. “Fatalities are down this year both in the backcountry and at the ski hill.”
