Rezoning of waste plant could see final reading Tuesday

"If council approves the item as it appears in the agenda and passes fourth and final reading, the M6 rezoning process will be complete."

The controversial waste recycling plant rezoning is set to receive fourth and final reading at the next Chilliwack council meeting.

“The restrictive covenant associated with the rezoning application has been completed, enabling the rezoning to proceed at this time,” reads the press release issued by City of Chilliwack Friday afternoon.

Opponents have said the riverside location is too fraught with risk, but city officials didn’t agree.

City reps hosted the original rezoning hearing on Dec. 3 to hear feedback on Aevitas’ application to rezone a 1.78-ha portion of property from an M4 (Heavy Industrial) Zone to an M6 (Special Industrial) Zone to facilitate the construction of a waste recycling and transfer facility in the Cattermole on Cannor Road.

Council satisfied with the land-use, passed second and third reading, citing the track record of the applicant, the comprehensive plans, and the safeguards through both the restrictive covenant and the Ministry of Environment approval process.

“If Council approves the item as it appears in the agenda and passes fourth and final reading, the M6 rezoning process will be complete. Aevitas would then work directly with the Ministry of Environment to ensure compliance with Provincial regulations,” according to the news release.
